The School is an independent organization that conducts research on improving the relationship between the city and art schools. The School operates in vacant spaces and then invites participants (students, alumni, professionals, schools, and the community) to join in researching the chosen topic in that specific neighborhood. The School activates this research through creative experiments, participatory projects such as exhibitions, art festivals, performances, etc. This consistently results in publications, whether online or in print. The improved dialogue in the community or on the subject matter leads to new agenda items for city and art school policymakers. The School approaches this in an activist or negotiating manner, never protesting, always creating. The scale of the organization starts small in a space and expands based on what the neighborhood or theme allows. Currently, The School is organizing 3 active research projects:

Nomad City is a research on sustainable and communal living in collaboration with PXL and UCLL.
FAX explores makers in the city center.
RARE RE ROSA RISU looks into professionalization in collaboration with PXL, UHASSELT, LUCA, and ZUYD.

The School never pays rent for the spaces it uses. In return, it invests in the neighborhood, city, school, and improvement. Owners, developers, or partners participate in a learning journey towards a better city.

The School is not a school, yet it is an educational project. Participants learn a great deal about themselves as creators, collaborators, and future entrepreneurs of a better society.

The School is een onafhankelijke organisatie die onderzoek doet naar de te verbeteren relatie tussen stad en kunstscholen. The School opereert telkens in leegstaande ruimtes en nodigt vervolgens participanten (studenten, alumni,professionals, scholen en buurt) uit om mee onderzoek te doen naar het gekozen onderwerp in die specifieke buurt. The School activeert dat onderzoek via creatieve experimenten, participatieve projecten zoals exposities, kunstenfestivals, performances, … Dit mondt stevast uit in publicaties, zij het online of geprint. De dialoog die hiermee verbeterd wordt in buurt of thematiek zorgt voor nieuwe agendapunten bij de beleidsmakers van stad en kunstscholen. The School is daarin activistisch, dan wel op onderhandelende wijze, nooit protesterend, altijd creërend. De schaal van de organisatie is klein aan de start van een ruimte, uitdeinend naar wat de buurt of de thematiek geeft. Op dit moment organiseert The School 3 actieve onderzoeken:

Nomad City is een onderzoek naar duurzaam en communaal leven in samenwerking met PXL en UCLL
FAX onderzoekt makers in de binnenstad
RARE RE ROSA RISU onderzoekt professionalisering ism FUTURN, PXL, UHASSELT, LUCA en ZUYD.

The School betaalt nooit huur voor ruimtes die het gebruikt. In ruil investeert het in buurt, stad, school en verbetering. Eigenaar, ontwikkelaar of partner participeert hiermee in een leertraject naar een betere stad.

The School is geen school, en toch is The School een educatief project. Particpanten leren enorm veel over zichzelf als maker, als samenwerker, als toekomstige ondernemer van een betere maatschappij.
